"We have utilized Because Teaching Matters in all of our Introduction to Teaching course, "School and Society," since the first edition was published and are thrilled with this third edition! It is by far the best book of its kind. In fact, I am not sure it has any real competitors because to cover the ground and conversations this book invites, we would have to require an Introduction to Teaching textbook as well as an Introduction to Educational Foundations textbook. We use Because Teaching Matters in a course that introduces teaching as a profession to prospective educators. In the past, we have struggled to find a book that fully integrates the social, cultural, economic, political, and historical processes impacting what goes on in classrooms with every aspect of the craft of teaching "in the real world." Marleen Pugach's expertise in teacher education, special education, educational foundations, and culturally responsive pedagogy is evident throughout this text. If you are looking for a book that engages prospective teachers in meaningful conversations regarding how societal issues and problems "show up" in the experiences they and their students will navigate in the classroom, this is the book you want. Marleen C. Pugach is Professor Emerita in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 2010 she received the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Research Foundation Senior Faculty Award. In 2005, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Merrill Award for Excellence in Teaching and Teacher Education from the Teacher Education Division of the International Council for Exceptional Children. In February 1998 she received the Margaret Lindsey Award from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education for her contributions to research in teacher education. She completed her Ph.D. in 1983 from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a joint specialization in special education and teacher education. Dr. Pugach is an international consultant on teacher education, focusing on teacher education policy, practice, and reform at the intersection of general and special education; and how to prepare teachers to practice equity-oriented teaching for their students across multiple, intersecting diversity communities.
