On September 4, 1090, a man disguised as a schoolteacher seized a mountain fortress in northern Iran. He paid the garrison commander 3,000 gold dinars and never left the rock again. From that fortress, for the next thirty-four years, Hasan-i Sabbah built a state. He trained operatives who assassinated viziers and caliphs with daggers in broad daylight. He developed a theology that promised paradise to those who died in the act. He created the most famous secret order of killers in history.
Or so the legend says.
The Hashashin: The Order of Assassins is the investigation behind the legend. Three stories run through this book, and they do not converge. The first is a history: a persecuted Ismaili Shia community that built a network of fortress-states across Iran and Syria, employed targeted assassination as one instrument in a broader military and diplomatic strategy, and survived the Mongol destruction to persist as a living religious community of 15 to 25 million people under the Aga Khan today. The second is a mythology: hashish-drugged killers in a garden of paradise, blind obedience, an omnipotent Old Man of the Mountain-constructed entirely by the Nizaris' enemies, amplified by Crusader romance and Marco Polo's fabrications, and commercialized by a video game franchise that has sold 230 million copies. The third is a historiography: two centuries of scholars arguing about how to understand a community whose primary sources were burned in 1256 and whose story has been told almost exclusively by people who wanted it destroyed.
The gap between the history and the mythology is not empty. It is filled with the anxieties and narrative appetites of every culture that encountered the Assassin legend and found something it needed.
How did a 12th-century Ismaili fortress-state become the template for every hooded killer, every hidden brotherhood, every conspiratorial order of shadows in Western culture? How much of what "everyone knows" about the Assassins comes from their enemies?
