Description
Metabolic and functional impairments in skeletal muscle frequently occur. These range from the symptoms of pain and fatigue to pathological disorders that may result in muscle wasting. However, many of these symptoms and features of skeletal muscle disease occur in diverse conditions, each with different aetiologies, methods of diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive text that brings the complex facets of skeletal muscle pathology, diagnosis and management together in a single coherent volume. All the contributing authors are of national or international standing and leading experts in their field with each chapter being a concise and detailed account of the current 'state-of-the-art'. Where relevant, the text is accompanied by diagrams, photomicrographs and tables with appropriate citations. The aim of the book is to enhance our understanding and treatment of skeletal muscle disorders.

This is a classic textbook dedicated to the topic of skeletal muscle, pathology, diagnosis, and management of disease. It is quite comprehensive, written in chapter format, and covers a myriad of topics regarding skeletal muscle from physiology to injury. PURPOSE In the absence of a preface, the purpose of this book is obvious to provide an extensive reference for students (medical and science) on skeletal muscle. This is an appropriate and reasonable goal. The authors have done a remarkable job in creating a broad book that covers topics of interest on skeletal muscle to a keen clinician or, more likely, a student or scientific researcher. The book is extensive in its coverage of normal physiology and injury and includes discussion of the effect of a myriad of other processes on the skeletal muscle system including diabetes, renal failure, steroids, alcohol, HIV, neurologic disease, etc. The most notable aspect of this book is the broad range of its coverage. Any student, researcher, or clinician could use this as a first source of information on many topics concerning skeletal muscle. A shortcoming, or at least a minor disappointment, is that I would have liked to see more color photos and larger higher quality photographic images. They are small and hard to read. ASSESSMENT: This is a great reference and I would recommend it be part of the general library at all medical centers, schools of kinesiology, and medical schools.
