The energy demand is gradually increasing due to urbanization and standard lifestyles. Present, power infrastructure network cannot accomplish demand of power supply. There are various issues of traditional electrical power networks such as poor power quality, high transmission losses, blackout and integration of distributed renewable energy resources. These problems can be removed using smart grid system because has intended at bring a drastically change of electrical power grid. Smart grid system has integrated modern communication infrastructure, optimization of demand, advance metering infrastructure, integration of advanced communication technologies, reliable, automation and sustainable of electricity to the consumers with reasonable price and supply demand management. The communication and information technology are help to provide a reliable, secure and efficient power management from complex network. This article summarized the communication technologies and research challenges such as standards interoperability, cognitive access to data management services and cyber security in smart grid.
