Alternatives to Custody

This work collates the most recent findings of social work researchers in Britain to demonstrate the diversity of options available within the probation services. Numerous possibilities are discussed, and it is demonstrated how they fit into the larger context of penal policy. The essays target such areas as: autocrime and driver retraining; intermediate treatment for offenders threatened by incarceration; options for problem drinkers; daytime training centres; and community work programmes. Overall, while the choices vary greatly and are certain to prompt debate, the book does recommend that a flexible role for social workers and a community-based approach towards offenders offer the most promise.
