This set provides students with the best plays (in some cases, the complete plays) of the major English Renaissance and Restoration dramatists, excluding Shakespeare. The texts are presented in modern spelling and are annotated and introduced by scholars. The introductory matter in each volume is factual and historical, including a brief biography of the playwright, a list of works and dates of their first performance, an account of source material, a short critical bibliography, a stage history and a brief note on the texts used. The playwrights included are Marston, Webster, Tourneur, Massinger, Jonson, Middleton and Ford from the earlier period, and Etherege, Wycherley and Congreve from the Restoration.
