This issue of Contemporary European Affairs discusses the Thatcherite political philosophy and vision of Europe and its impact on the practical question of the workings of the Single European Market after 1992. The Thatcherite position, given eloquent intellectual backing by Nigel Lawson's 1989 speech reprinted here, is deregulation yes, reregulation no; in essence, that the removal of barriers and restrictions will allow the market to operate and, in consequence, that the other measures will find their own level without specific legal intervention by the Community. However, there is also a social aspect to the unified European market - without social protection the market could produce low wages, diminished welfare, and fewer social provisions.
