Jan Pienkowski was born in Warsaw in 1936. After creating his first book at the age of eight, he worked in design, including television, theatre and greetings cards. He had a wonderful collaboration with Joan Aiken and pioneered the modern pop-up book. He also worked on the beloved Meg and Mog books. He won the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration twice.
