Reading Lights

Being "different" is difficult to accept at any age, but for a very young child it is particularly challenging and upsetting. "Reading Lights" is a set of four comic books for four- to seven-year-olds which address in a simple but creative way what it is like to be "different", and they follow the motto "Stop! Think! Understand!" They are accompanied by a poster with four photocopiable resource sheets that suggest activities and provide a helpful discussion framework. The set is made up of the following titles. "Little Raja - The Elephant with the Troublesome Trunk" by Woodrow Phoenix. Raja upsets every animal in town - until he learns how to squirt and splash and save the day. "Peaches - the Puppy who Screeches" by Corinne Pearlman. No one will play with Peaches, but when she puts her bark to the rescue, everything changes. "Streaky - the Annoying Little Piglet" by Ed Hillyer. Life is good to Streaky - if he "thoinks" before he acts. "Quackerline - the Duck who wanted to be a Swan" by Graham Higgins. Being yourself is hard work - but it's easier than trying to be someone else.
