Description
'As dead as a dodo' does not apply to the legendary flightless bird from Mauritius in the State and City Library of Augsburg!
Here it lives on in words and pictures and hopefully feels, like the writer Jorge Luis Borges, as if it were in paradise among all the books in a library.
In addition to more recent depictions of the dodo (Raphus cucullatus), the library's rich collection of scientific and natural history books includes the oldest depictions of the dodo, which was cited very early on in numerous scientific and popular books as an example of human-caused species extinction.
In an exhibition in spring 2026, the State and City Library of Augsburg will display its holdings from the graphic arts collection and the natural science collections on the dodo, together with a bilingual cross-section of essays by internationally renowned scientists who have dealt with the dodo in pictorial, archaeological and literary terms. It doesn't get much more alive than that!
