Description
Two dozen artists from countries around the world offer their own perspectives on British society. In a project that is unparalleled in its scope and scale, iconic British photographer Martin Parr has selected works, dating from the interwar period to today, that capture the social, cultural and political identity of the UK through the camera lens. These images range from social documentary and street photography, to portraiture and architectural photography and offer a reflection of how Britain is perceived by those outside its borders. The book features some of the leading figures of 20th and 21st century photography, including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Robert Frank, David Goldblatt, Candida Hofer, Sergio Larrain, Shinro Ohtake, Paul Strand and Garry Winogrand. From the Hebrides to Dover, Belfast to Cardiff, modern Britain comes to life from a fresh perspective-and the results are both strange and familiar.
Reviews / Votes
"Featuring 200 photographs by masters of the medium including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Robert Frank, Sergio Larrain, Paul Strand, and Garry Winogrand, Strange and Familiar takes us across the British Isles and to Ireland, providing a powerful look at the people of a nation during the century that their empire fell, bringing us into a new century where regular is de rigeur, though it wouldn't be England without the eccentric characters."-Crave Online
"Guided by the droll eye of British photographer Martin Parr, who coedited the book with Barbican curator Alona Pardo, the exhibition/catalogue gathers photographs that consistently delight and provoke the viewer. Summing up: A"
