Description
Madeline Finn has a brand new puppy and lots of responsibilities. She has to walk Star, and feed him, and make sure he has a safe place to sleep. But, she learns, the most important thing is love. So when Madeline Finn visits an animal shelter, she has lots of questions about the dogs who live there. Do they get to play outside? Do they get to sleep under blankets? Does anyone read to them? Does anyone tell them they love them? Madeline Finn is determined to help the shelter dogs. But can she find a way to make each one of them feel special? With the help of some friends and a few good books, she just may discover that even small people can make a big difference.
Reviews / Votes
The healing power of books, and the joys of shared reading, are guaranteed to tug at everyone's heartstrings in (this) beautiful and inspirational picture book... Love and caring shine out from every page of this adorable and gentle story. * The Lancashire Post * This picture book is perfect for young readers who love looking after animals. The gentle story is illustrated with detailed pictures with a nostalgic quality. -- Sarah Tyson * BooksUpNorth blog * Human-hound interaction works both ways, and this book turns the original idea lightly on its head and focuses on the need of all dogs for love - expressed in this instance by reading to them... The illustrations are delightful: gentle depictions in pastels of the action as it unfolds. Definitely a worthy contender for the Early Years classroom, and beyond. -- Liz Broad * Just Imagine * Every page of this story deserves to be lingered over. The illustrations in warm, pastel shades radiate gentleness and care... the contrast in the expressions and body language of the caged animals on Madeline's first visit to the shelter compared to the day when the shelter fills with children and books and blankets is heart-meltingly glorious... The characters and storytelling resonate with the same kindness, wisdom and observation of the joyful details of everyday life as Shirley Hughes' Alfie books. I highly recommend Madeline Finn and the Rescue Dog as a gift for any young child of your acquaintance, for every nursery and early years and Key Stage 1 classroom. -- Veronica Price * V's View from the Bookshelves blog * Praise for Madeline Finn and the Library Dog: Warm and wonderful - and just the ticket for little readers who've lost their confidence.More details

American author and illustrator Lisa Papp was inspired by her local library's "Read-to-Dogs" program. Most of the dogs featured in the book were once living a life on the streets or in shelters. "These former shelter dogs are now spending their lives helping children. It's a beautiful thing to watch."
