Description
Although the theory of faithfulness is a cornerstone of Optimality Theory, so far no monographs have been published which deal exclusively with this particular aspect of the theory. This book aims to fill this gap by giving an overview of different proposals which have been made in the literature and synthesizing them into an original new theory. It shows that we need a restrictive, formalised view of faithfulness - inparticular, that monostratal views of faithfulness relations (such as Containment) have a larger explanatory power than bistratal views. The book thus gives both an overview of the most important theories of faithfulness in Optimality Theory as well as providing an original contribution.
