Lindisfarne

This book provides an authoritative introduction to the history and archaeology of Lindisfarne, from its earliest occupation to the twenty-first century. Arranged chronologically, specific chapters address prehistoric settlement, the foundation of the early Christian monastery in the seventh century and the story of the monastic community, the cult of Saint Cuthbert, the growth of the village and construction of the island fortifications, and the post-medieval development of the fishing and lime-burning industries. Lindisfarne incorporates the fresh developments in the archaeological study of the growth of the medieval and post-medieval village produced by excavation and and the study of standing buildings, and recent work on the most famous object associated with the island: the Lindisfarne Gospels.
