What is one to do with an author who laces together bits of different quotations, or gives us half a quotation expecting us to supply the rest, who scorns directness in favor of indirectness and presents persons in masks that need to be penetrated, who assumes a knowledge of Greek, Latin, French, English, and Hebrew, who constantly works with concealing irony? O'Flaherty, for all his affectionate immersion in his subject, never loses his cool and writes with exemplary clarity even on the most complex and involuted matters. * WAKE FOREST MAGAZINE *
