Description
With Edinburgh holding Word Heritage Site status, the preservation of the city's classic buildings has been paramount to the city fathers - despite myriad plans to level large swathes of the existing architecture and totally redesign the cityscape. So what might have been? In Unbuilt Edinburgh, Alexander Mullay takes us on a guided tour of Edinburgh as it would have looked had any of the disregarded plans gone ahead. From the shocking - such as a six-lane highway viaduct over the New Town Valley - to the promising - such as a canal in the gardens to reflect the bulk of the castle above Princes Street, a campanile towering over the medical school, or one of the four designs of opera house for the city - Unbuilt Edinburgh is a fascinating, often humorous and sometimes outrageous look at the way Edinburgh might have been - beautifully presented and described by an expert in Edinburgh architecture and design.
