Description
'Son of Man' is practically the only self-designation employed by Jesus himself in the gospels, but is used in such a way that no hint is left of any particular theological significance. Still, during the first many centuries of the church, the expression as it was reused was given content, first literally as signifying Christ's human nature. Later 'Son of Man' was thought to be a christological title in its own right. Today, many scholars are inclined to think that, in an original Aramaic of an historical Jesus, it was little more than a rhetorical circumlocution, referring to the one speaking. Mogens MA1/4ller's 'The Expression 'Son of Man' and the Development of Christology: A History of Interpretation' is the first study of the 'Son of Man' trope, which traces the history of interpretation from the Apostolic Fathers to the present, concluding that the various interpretations of this phrase reflect little more than the various doctrinal assumptions held by its interpreters over centuries.
Reviews / Votes
'This work will be an indispensable tool for some time to come for anyone researching the term 'Son of Man.' It is the product of years of meticulous research -- some of which goes back to the early 1970s -- that successfully avoids the trap of losing the wider picture in all the detail. Muller really has done a superb service to NT studies with this publication and deserves congratulations. This is a 'must read' for any NT scholar or serious student undertaking Son of Man research'. JSNT 2010, Volume 32.5 '...M's book will provide a valuable resource for everyone working in this vexed area of Gospel studies. M has done us all a service in providing such a comprehensive, and scrupulously fair, descriptive summary of the works of so many people who have wrestled with the problem of the term Son of Man. For that, he is to warmly thanked -- and congratulated.' The Catholic Biblical Quarterly, 72, 2010 'To this superb survey of the history of the term son of man there is no equivalent.' Rollin Kearns, Ohio Wesleyan University, Review of Biblical Literature 03/2010 "A reader can only salute with awe and gratitude M's own vast work of research and synthesis. ...The book is stimulating as well as encyclopaedic. ...The book is a survey not simply of scholars, but also of the way in which various sources from time to time become central in discussion. It should surely now be the first resource for serious study of the question. M. must be warmly congratulated on carrying his project through." - Theologische LiteraturezeitungMore details
