Between the Stone

Between the breathing of millstone, the grinding of ice, the gouging of water and the rasping of gravel, a dramatic landscape was sculpted in the Upper Calder Valley. The deep wooded ravines and racing becks were harnessed to power a revolution in cloth production. Mill chimneys were thrown up taller than the ancient trees. Wild moorlands of glistening peat and the rocky outcrops remained untamed. Worlds of folklore and myth where boulders speak, and stories are woven, layer the sediment of our lives. The poetry and prose in this book has been excavated from that tradition.
