Description
Math Mammoth Grade 1-B worktext (Light Blue Series) is the student book for the second half of first grade mathematics studies in the Math Mammoth Grade 1 curriculum. This is the 2026 edition.
In this part B, the main areas of study are: addition and subtraction facts within 0-10;
geometric shapes, halves, and quarters;
measuring length;
adding and subtracting within 0-100;
bar graphs;
and counting coins.
Features of the curriculum
Math Mammoth focuses on conceptual understanding. It explains the "WHY", so the children can understand the math, not just learn "HOW" to do it.
Concepts are often explained with visual models, followed by exercises using those models. These visual models can take the place of manipulatives for many children; however, it is very easy to add corresponding manipulatives to the lessons if so desired.
The curriculum is mastery-oriented. This means it concentrates fairly long on a topic, delving into its various aspects. This promotes conceptual understanding, as opposed to spiral curricula that often tend to jump from topic to topic too much.
There is a strong emphasis on mental math and number sense.
The curriculum requires very little teacher preparation.
The curriculum has no separate teacher's manual nor is it scripted. The introduction to each chapter has some notes for the teacher concerning the material in the chapter. All the instruction is written directly to the student in the worktext, and there also exist accompanying videos where you can see Maria herself teach the material.
After each chapter introduction, you will find a list of Internet links and resources (games, quizzes, animations, etc.) that can be used for fun, illustrations, and further practice. For addition and subtraction facts, you can use our online practice program (free).
A companion to this book, Math Mammoth Grade 1-A worktext covers the first half of 1st grade math (available separately). Also available are the answer keys and a book containing cumulative reviews and chapter tests.

Person
Maria Miller was born and grew up in Finland where she also received a master's degree in mathematics in 1997. She loves math and teaching, so becoming a math teacher was a natural career for her.
Miller started writing math books in 2002, prompted by her experiences in tutoring homeschooled children. She felt the books they were using were inferior, especially when it came to conceptual understanding of mathematics, so she began to write books that focus on the concepts and the "why" of mathematics, though not forgetting the "how" and the needful practice.
Over the years, her materials have become popular and appreciated, both among parents and teachers.
In her free time, she likes walking, bicycling, swimming, reading, helping out with Inspire4.com, playing piano, and listening to music.
