The Little Engine follows a little train engine who takes up the task of carrying a large train up a massive hill-a task that larger and more accomplished engines refused to do. However, he is positive and confident the whole way and ends up succeeding in his mission, making it over the crest of the hill and down the other side.

Olive Kennon Beaupre was an American writer born in 1883. Olive first began writing stories and poems for her daughter and was encouraged by her husband to publish them. After having her first works published by P.F. Volland Company, Olive founded The Book House for Children with her husband in 1919, where she could publish children's stories to her own standards. One of Olive's most famous works was her six-volume collection of My Book House, which was the first collection to be graded to meet the developing needs and abilities of children of different ages.
