As a result, readers gain a solid grounding in fundamental x-ray optics and techniques. The book includes worked examples and problems, as well as a list of further reading. Some example programs are also provided, such as for calculating multilayer reflectivity and zone plate diffraction patterns. Equally a useful reference for experienced researchers in the field.

Alan Michette obtained his B.S. degree in physics and Ph.D. degree in particle physics at University College London. After a short spell as a postdoctoral fellow at UCL, he spent four years at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory before taking up a lectureship in physics at Queen Elizabeth College London, where he started his current main research programe in x-ray physics. He then moved to King's College London in 1984. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and of the Royal Microscopical Society. His research interests are in the x-ray emission of laser produced plasmas, the development of novel (including adaptive) x-ray optics, and the application of these technologies in advanced laboratory scale x-ray instruments. He is currently a Team Leader in the UK Smart X-Ray Optics consortium, chair of the Management Committee of the European Science Foundation COST Action "Short Wavelength Laboratory Sources", and Course Leader for the Masters by Research in Bio-, Nano-, and X-Ray Photonics at King's College. Slawomira J. Pfauntsch received her PhD from the department of X-Ray Science & Technology at King's College. Since 1993 she is there research assistant/associate in Physics. Her current research interest lies in soft x-ray laser-plasma sources and optics, for high resolution microscopy and cellular probing, and x-ray detectors. Furthermore she is teaching assistance in Image and X-Ray Physics.
