Former chef, tour guide and private eye, she is completing a PhD in Creative & Critical Writing at the University of East Anglia, where she also received an MA. She is the author of Encyclopaedia of Snow. As a work-in-progress, Van Rijn earned her an Arts Council Writers' Award in 2004. She lives in London.
