He pays special attention to the legendary all-conquering 917 of 1970 and 1971, the ultimate expression of the air-cooled theme, which was described by Le Mans winner Derek Bell as 'the most outrageous motor car' and which was banned, perhaps because it had been too successful. But the author also accounts for Porsche's spectacular and expensive failures, the 1961 Grand Prix single-seater among them, which show another, rarely seen side of this fascinating company.
