Description
The polymerase chain reaction, PCR, is a method for copying DNA in the test tube by mimicking natural DNA replication. Whereas in nature the complete genome is replicated, in the PCR only a short fragment of DNA is copied repeatedly. This "amplified" DNA fragment can then be studied in detail. The PCR is now routinely used for gene cloning, analysis and manipulation in many molecular biology labs. It has also found wide application in medicine including diagnosis of genetic disease, mutational analysis, and forensic pathology.
