Description
An indispensable guide for all who teach in grades six through eight, as well as curriculum directors, reading specialists, literacy coaches, and school administrators, Inside the Common Core Classroom: Practical ELA Strategies for Grades 6-8 is the middle-grade volume of Pearson's definitive new series on the Common Core State Standards. It provides essential information about the Common Core initiative, insights into the standards, practical classroom strategies, and vignettes from Common Core-aligned classrooms. Real-life instruction examples are included in every chapter, along with a variety of teaching strategies and applications. An interdisciplinary unit on climate change pulls the book together with discipline-specific teaching suggestions, sample lesson plans, an assessment and evaluation plan, a culminating activity, and a rich collection of additional resources.

At a time when standards are being implemented-and required-everywhere, providing a book that covers the standards in a particular content area is essential. Inside the Common Core Classroom: Practical ELA Strategies for Grades 6-8 constantly refers to the standards and walks the reader through what teachers can do to meet them.McLaughlin continually reminds the reader that implementation of the standards is new for everyone; we are all learning what to do and how to do it. She also makes a point of letting us know that simply having a copy of the standards in hand does NOT tell us what we should do to assist our students in meeting them. This text's ideas for classroom use are plentiful, offering teachers ideas that would suit a variety of students' ability levels. -- Bonnie Dezern Olson, East Hardin Middle School (KY)
This text's strengths are in its readability, its practical applications to move toward the CCSS philosophy, which was expertly conveyed by the author, and the great resources that are compiled throughout. The vast number of resources currently available to teachers is approaching an overwhelming level. The resources included are of high value, and I am already anxious to refer to them in the near future.
McLaughlin is able to communicate a difficult topic in an easy-to-read format. I would feel confident giving this book to a colleague, even one new to teaching; they would come away with a correct understanding of the CCSS philosophy and practical ways to implement it in their classrooms. -- Susan Grinsteinner, River Oaks Middle School (SC)
