For almost a century and a half, Fettes College has educated young people to play their part in society. Built on profits from the French wars of the eighteenth century, it embodied the Victorian virtues of duty, sportsmanship and hard work. Its first pupils were empire builders, and military service was seen as both honourable and prestigious. This world was gradually transformed in the twentieth century, and one of the rebels against tradition was one Tony Blair.
