Friederike Mayrocker was born in Vienna in 1924, the city in which she still lives. She worked as an English teacher from 1946 to 1969. One of the foremost European avant-garde writers, she has written over eighty books, including novels, short stories, plays, children's books and poetry. She was a Nobel Prize nominee in 2004, and has received literary prizes including the Premio Internationale.
