This authoritative new text features a unique approach to teaching generalist social work that incorporates the latest EPAS guidelines and integrates a micro/macro approach to social work instruction. It is the first social work text to fully incorporate, from its initial publication, the new educational mandates (EPAS) of the Council of Social Work Education, requiring all instruction to diverge from "social work practice as usual" and emphasise client diversity, incorporate issues of human rights and social/economic justice, apply research-informed practise and practise-informed research and engage in policy practise. Research skills and evidence-based practise are at the foundation of each phase of practise presented in the text. Tina Maschi PhD is an assistant professor at Fordham University's Graduate School of Social Service. Her research and practise interest focus on at-risk youth, mental health and juvenile justice involvement. Dr. Maschi's research interests include trauma, mental health and criminality across the lifespan and community-based research and evaluation. She is also a licensed clinical social worker with extensive practise experience (including the use of creative arts techniques) in correctional, school and community mental health settings. She currently teaches research and practise courses in the Master's programme at Fordham's Lincoln Center campus.
Elaine P. Congress, MSW, DSW, is Associate Dean and Professor at Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service in New York City. She has also served as Director of the Doctoral Program there. Dr. Congress has written extensively in the areas of cultural diversity, social work ethics and social work education, including 3 books and over 30 professional journal articles and book chapters. She has presented on cultural diversity and social work ethics at national and international conferences in the United States, Europe and Australia. She developed the culturagram, a tool for assessing and working with culturally diverse families. Dr. Congress serves on the United Nations (UN) Team for the International Federation of Social workers (IFSW) and is a past president of the New York City chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Before entering academia, she was a practitioner, supervisor and administrator in a community mental health programme.
Betty Garcia, PhD, LCSW is a professor at California State University at Fresno School of Social Work and a licensed clinical social worker. She has Chaired the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Tract on Cultural Competence and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) National Committee on Ethnic and Cultural Diversity (NCORED) and is on the CSWE Board of Directors. She is the author of two books on teaching diversity content and has several publications on diversity teaching, cultural competence, social work practise, substance abuse and immigration. Betty has practised in various settings that include community based mental health clinics and forensic mental health and teaches classes in public mental health, group work and practise with couples and families. She is on the editorial board of Affilia, Women's Social Work Journal. Her books include Strengthening the DSM (Springer Publishing Company, 2011), Diversity Education for Social Justice: Mastering Teaching Skills, 2nd Edition (2008), and Social Work Practice for Social Justice: Cultural Competence in Action (2006).

She teaches courses in community and organisational practise, research, family-centred social work interventions, forensic social work and more. Her recent publications include articles in Children and Youth Services Review, Traumatology, Social Work in Public Health, Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, Social Work Research, Social Work and others. She also contributed chapters to Forensic Social Work (Springer Publishing Company, 2009).
