Approaching Loss

Loss comes at its own pace..amorphous and unknowable. It can be relentless.....old age, a stalking lion, a vulgar little tumor. It can be sudden, instantaneous; the head-on collision, the snap of the elevator cable, the rupture of a tiny blood vessel. It may be at its worst when its approach is unseen. No preparation is possible. No chance for amends or prayers; no time for bargains with God. So it came to Brian Baylor. A big-city man, street smart, NY/LA cool, a success, a young retiree with the woman of his dreams moving on to their secluded ranch in New Mexico. But, the high desert holds dangers that nullify street smarts. Seemingly senseless challenges can trump success. As idyllic visions give way to reality, as unforeseen forces make themselves manifest, Brian is caught up with people from whom he has no effective defense.
