Growing up and spending my life in the Sierra Nevada foothills and mountains close to Yosemite National Park, I have always spent a lot of time outdoors, working, playing, hiking, camping, birding and just observing. Nature plays a big part in my life and it comes out in the stories, songs and poems I write. I had written quite a few short stories, children's stories and songs, though I'd yet to publish anything. One day Dede, a friend of mine who owned a daycare center where my grandchildren went, called me up and said, "Jason, you've got stories and songs. Could you do something to entertain the kids this coming Wednesday? I need someone to fill in." Of course I said yes, though I had nothing ready, but I had a couple of days to prepare. So I took this story and drew up some pictures using colored pencils, although nothing as good as the pictures here for I am not an artist. Along with my guitar and a few songs to sing, I read it to the group of children, and the response was so overwhelmingly good I decided to get it published.
