Description
We live in fragmented cities. What sort of fragments -- hybrids, pixels, borders, and territories -- make up the contemporary city? Shrinking cities, fast-growing cities and shifting cities; cities that divide themselves into separate territories -- islands that exist in parallel but at varying speeds. We will explore the ways in which people construct a better life for themselves in a non-utopian age stripped of such ideological illusions as the social state and multiculturalism; one example is the pursuit of self-sustainability. How small can a fragment be? Are you, perhaps, the smallest fragment? Invited by Fondazione Antonio Ratti as Visiting Professor for the XII Advanced Course in Visual Arts, Marjetica Potrc conducted a reflection on the word's developing urbanistic and territorial transformations.Fragment Worlds documents the discussions emerged during the course, with texts by Potrc on Amazonia and Western Balkans, and contributions on the relation between shrinking cities (Kyong Park) and the beyond-city (Lorenzo Romito).
