Es también presidente de la Asociación de Apicultores de Vermont, un ex profesor de secundaria, y fue miembro de la Casa de Representantes de Vermont de 1985 a 1991. Un corredor ávido, lector, cantante de coro y viajero, tiene también una gran pasión por la historia, filosofía y la pesca.
