Smart Grids and Sustainable Energy Systems: An Introduction is a unique guide to the concepts of low carbon technologies, energy sustainability and Smart Grids, subjects that are typically taught separately.Based on the material taught by the authors, this textbook discusses the fundamentals of a sustainable energy system with the Smart Grid paradigm as its key enabler.

Pierluigi Mancarella obtained his PhD in Power Systems from the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, in 2006. Soon after, he became a Research Fellow at the Politecnico di Torino before moving to Imperial College London, where he stayed until 2011. He joined the University of Manchester in May 2011 and he is currently a Lecturer in Future Energy Networks. His key research interests include: techno-economic modelling and analysis of multi-energy systems; integration of low carbon technologies in power systems; business models for distributed energy technologies and risk analysis of future networks.

Luis F. Ochoa joined The University of Manchester in 2011. Between 2007 and 2010 he was a Research Fellow in Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh, UK; however, in 2010 he also undertook an industrial secondment with Psymetrix Ltd (now Alstom Grid). His research interests include: integration of distributed low-carbon technologies; active network management; optimisation of distribution networks; future distribution network management systems; and Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) hardware-in-the-loop studies.
