Nicola Maguire is a passionate linguist and believes that everyone can learn a second language and you are never too old or too young to start. She is a fully qualified Languages teacher and has been teaching Spanish to A (Advanced) level at Outstanding Secondary schools in the UK for over 15 years, 14 as Head of Department. From 2016-2021 she has been Chair of the Association for Language Learning (ALL) for the South West branch and one of her Spanish lessons features on the Bristol University School of Education PGCE Spanish course. She was part of the team who won the 'European Languages Award' for the 'Talk project' early in her teaching career, and has trained teachers at the Open University.
Nicola is the author of Roni la Rana (Roni the Frog), a bilingual book for non-bilinguals, so parents, grandparents and teachers can learn Spanish whilst reading aloud to children. The idea came to her a number of years ago when she realised that the main bilingual books on the market are aimed at native speakers and those who already know how to pronounce the language. She firmly believes that language learning is for everyone and its benefits are many: improving cognitive ability, communication and creativity from babies to adults.
Nicola has lived in Spain, France and the United States and now calls Bristol her home. She has a degree in Spanish, French and Legal Studies and loves to travel to places where she can put her languages into practice. She also loves dancing and the independent and cultural scenes in Bristol, including any excuse for a fiesta!
