Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Smith has spent his life believing in that system. Once a celebrated war hero, the Homeland Guard reassigns him to Chillicothe, Ohio to take command of his hometown-a posting that should be routine.

Outgoing commander Colonel "Crazy Tom" Prescott-once the star quarterback in high school and Daniel's former classmate-refuses to step aside. What begins as a contested transfer quickly becomes something far more dangerous. With his authority challenged at every step, Daniel seeks allies without knowing who he can trust.
At the same time, his daughter Karen-a top cadet at The Ohio State Military University-prepares to embark on her own career. Driven, disciplined, and certain of her future, she believes her next year will be decisive.
