The previous edition of this book was based on the system by Cronquist (1981). This new edition deals with angiosperm families according to the APG (1998) classification. This affected the treatment of 78 families out of 249 that appeared in the previous edition: 47 families appear in both editions, but are differently circumscribed, 31 fams. have disappeared from the previous edition, and 54 families are treated here for the first time. This book provides an excellent opportunity to educate new generations of systematists using a phylogeny - based classification.
