He studied classical Arabic at the University of Lebanon and the School of African and Oriental Studies in London and has lived and travelled extensively in Islamic lands. He has published widely on Islamic history and culture and currently lives in Seville where he devotes his time to a project engaged in mapping pre-modern cultural and economic contacts.
