Ever since the Middle Ages and right up to modern times, the discovery of new worlds and the establishment of trade routes have been inseparably connected to the exploration of new shipping routes. The concomitant preference on anything exotic in Europe in the late 19th century not only profoundly changed the consumer buying habits of the continent, but also largely determined the face of the globe. Still today, raw materials such as cocoa, coffee, cotton and rubber, as well as precious metals such as silver or gold and, since the 20th century, mainly fuels such as crude oil and natural gas, define the flow of goods and guarantee the added value associated with it. In contemporary artistic positions, as they are now shown at Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Europe's largest exhibition hall in one of the largest port cities in Europe (»Gateway to the World«), questions about cultural and historical transfers are therefore closely linked to the capitalist economic system and global economic dependencies. In this complex weave of social relationships, water plays an important role as a network of routes and stands as a metaphor for changing as well as ever improving relations between nations. The aim of the exhibition and book is to establish connections between Hamburg as the port of destination and the countries of origin of goods in Asia, Latin America, Africa and other parts of Europe using different artistic practices such as film, video, as well as sculpture, tapestry, installations and social projects. La découverte de nouveaux mondes et le développement de routes commerciales sont, du Moyen-âge à l'époque moderne, indissociablement liés à l'exploration de nouvelles voies maritimes. La ruée vers l'exotisme qui les a accompagnés dans l'Europe de la fin du 19e siècle n'a néanmoins pas seulement modifié en profondeur les habitudes de consommation du vieux continent, elle a aussi déterminé dans une large mesure la face du monde. Des matières premières comme le cacao, le café, le coton ou le caoutchouc, des métaux précieux comme l'or ou l'argent, puis au 20e siècle des sources d'énergie comme le pétrole brut ou le gaz naturel, alimentent encore aujourd'hui les flux de marchandises et garantissent ainsi la création de valeur qui y est associée. C'est pourquoi aux yeux des artistes contemporains aujourd'hui exposés aux Deichtorhallen de Hambourg - la plus grande salle d'exposition d'Europe dans l'une des plus grandes métropoles portuaires d'Europe (« la porte sur le monde ») -, les problématiques des transferts historico-culturels sont étroitement liées à la gestion capitaliste et aux interdépendances économiques mondiales. Dans cet entrelacs complexe de relations sociales, l'eau joue un rôle porteur en tant que réseau de rues et incarne métaphoriquement l'évolution des relations et le rapprochement entre les peuples. L'objectif de l'exposition et du livre est de créer, à l'aide de diverses pratiques artistiques telles que film, vidéo, ou encore sculpture, tapisserie, installations et projets sociaux, des liens entre Hambourg en tant que port de destination et les pays d'origine des produits en Asie, Amérique latine, Afrique et dans d'autres parties de l'Europe. Die Entdeckung neuer Welten und der Aufbau von Handelswegen sind vom Mittelalter bis in die Neuzeit untrennbar mit der Erkundung neuer Schifffahrtsrouten verbunden. Dabei hat der damit einhergehende Run auf das Exotische im Europa des späten 19. Jahrhunderts nicht nur die Konsumgewohnheiten des Kontinents tiefgreifend verändert, sondern auch maßgeblich das Gesicht des Globus bestimmt. Rohstoffe wie Kakao, Kaffee, Baumwolle oder Gummi, Edelmetalle wie Silber oder Gold, im 20. Jahrhundert dann vor allem Energieträger wie Rohöl und Erdgas bilden bis heute die Warenströme und garantieren die damit verbundene Wert- schöpfung. Für zeitgenössische künstlerische Positionen, wie sie nun in den Deichtorhallen Hamburg - Europas größter Ausstellungshalle in einer der größten Hafenmetropolen Europas (»Tor zur Welt«) - gezeigt werden, sind daher Fragestellungen nach kulturhistorischen Transfers eng verknüpft mit der kapitalistischen Wirtschaftsweise sowie den weltweiten ökonomischen Abhängigkeiten. In diesem komplexen gesellschaftlichen Beziehungsgeflecht spielt das Wasser als Wegenetz eine tragende Rolle und steht metaphernhaft für Beziehungswandel wie Annäherung zwischen den Völkern. Ziel von Ausstellung und Buch ist es, mit unterschiedlichen künstlerischen Praktiken wie Film, Video, aber auch Skulptur, Tapesserie, Installationen und sozialen Projekten Verbindungen zwischen Hamburg als Zielhafen und den Ursprungsländern der Waren in Asien, Lateinamerika, Afrika und anderen Teilen Europas herzustellen.
