The first edition of this book established itself as the basic modern history of Chile in English, its major thrust being the persistent tension between the Hispanic tradition in Chile and later outside factors - the expansion of Western European capitalism, imported liberalism, Marxism, and the influence of the United States. For this second edition, the editor has added a new chapter and has updated the bibliography and chronology. Readership: historians; those concerned with South American studies.
