Christian Rosa: I am in Love with the Coco
Description
Born in Rio in 1982, Christian Rosa studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 2007 to 2012 in the class of Daniel Richter. His works on canvas are minimal compositions on invariably unprimed, rough, beige canvas: colorful loops, craquelures, obliterations, casually painted bubbles and squares. His playful approach to reduction within his work is reminiscent of Cy Twombly, one of the most enduring American abstract painters outside the United States, as well as Juan Míro's vivacious use of color. Christian Rosa's works implicitly call on the »Empire of Signs«, determined by Roland Barthes for Twombly. Alongside Oscar Murillo and David Ostrowsky, Christian Rosa is currently considered one of the most compelling young positions in contemporary art. Vienna proved to be a good platform for the cosmopolitan Brazilian; after the current exhibition at the Kunstverein Heilbronn, his work will be on show at White Cube Gallery in London (March 20-May 23, 2015). This catalog, realized together with Kunstverein Heilbronn, is the second monographic publication with Christian Rosa; the first catalog, »Love's gonna save the day«, published in collaboration with CFA Gallery Berlin last summer, is already out of print!

Né en 1982 à Rio de Janeiro, Christian Rosa a fait ses études de 2007 à 2012 à l'Académie des arts plastiques de Vienne, dans la classe de Daniel Richter. Ses toiles sont des compositions minimales sur des fonds beige rugueux sans sous-couche : boucles de couleur, craquelures, rayures, bulles peintes sans soin ou carrés. Son répertoire extrêmement réduit rappelle, ce n'est pas un hasard, Cy Twombly, l'un des peintres abstraits américains à la réputation la plus durable hors des États-Unis et les jeux de couleurs de Juan Míro. L'ouvre de Christian Rosa en appelle aussi à l'« empire des signes », constaté par Roland Barthes à propos de Twombly. Avec Oscar Murillo et David Ostrowsky, Christian Rosa occupe l'une des jeunes positions actuellement les plus éclatantes de l'art contemporain en discussion. Vienne n'a donc pas été la moins appropriée des scènes pour ce Brésilien cosmopolite ; après l'exposition actuelle au Kunstverein de Heilbronn, il sera présenté à la White Cube galerie de Londres (20.3-23.5.2015). Le catalogue produit avec le Kunstverein de Heilbronn est notre deuxième publication monographique avec Christian Rosa, après le catalogue intitulé « Love's gonna save the day », paru l'été dernier avec la CFA Gallery de Berlin et déjà épuisé.

1982 in Rio de Janeiro geboren, hat Christian Rosa von 2007 bis 2012 in Wien an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in der Klasse von Daniel Richter studiert. Seine Leinwandarbeiten sind minimale Setzungen auf stets nicht grundierter, rauher, beigefarbener Leinwand: farbige Schlaufen, Krakelüren, Ausstreichungen, nachlässig gemalte Blasen oder Quadrate. Sein mit der Reduktion spielendes Repertoire erinnert dabei nicht von ungefähr an Cy Twombly, einen der am nachhaltigsten wirkenden amerikanischen Abstrakten außerhalb der Staaten oder an die farbige Verspieltheit eines Juan Míros. Auf jeden Fall rufen die Arbeiten von Christian Rosa das von Roland Barth für Cy Twombly konstatierte »Reich der Zeichen« auf. Neben Oscar Murillo und David Ostrowsky steht Christian Rosa damit zurzeit als eine der wohl schillerndsten jungen Positionen zeitgenössischer Kunst zur Diskussion. Wien war keine schlechte Bühne für den kosmopolitisch geprägten Brasilianer; nach der aktuellen Show im Kunstverein Heilbronn geht es in die White Cube Gallery, London (20.3.-23.5.2015). Der gemeinsam mit dem Kunstverein Heilbronn realisierte Katalog ist nun bereits die zweite monografische Publikation mit Christian Rosa; der mit der CFA Gallery, Berlin, im Sommer letzten Jahres verlegte Katalog »Love's gonna save the day« ist bereits vergriffen!
