In its central books the philosopher puts in the mouth of Socrates the principles of its challenging political construction.
The defense of the philosophical government in Plato's Republic reveals the necessity of distinguishing true philosophers from false ones. This issue leads to the central question of the Good, the principle that constitutes the foundation of philosophical knowledge and of political activity. Once this principle has been introduced, the subsequent question turns on the education of the philosophers, which occupies Book VII.
The present volume contains contributions to the main issues developed in Books V-VII of the Republic, on which the attention of scholarship in the past 100 years has focused, practical philosophy, metaphysics, dialectics, and the question of the Good.

In ihren zentralen Büchern läßt Platon den Socrates die Prinzipien seiner gewagten politischen Konstruktion darstellen.
Die Verteidigung der philosophischen Regierung in Platons Politeia zeigt die Notwendigkeit einer Differenzierung zwischen echten und unechten Philosophen. Dieses Thema führt zu der zentralen Frage des Prinzips, welches das Fundament der philosophischen Erkenntnis und der politischen Aktivität ausmacht: das Gute. Nachdem dieses Prinzip bestimmt ist, ist die nächste zu behandelnde Frage die Philosophenausbildung im 7. Buch.
Der vorliegende Band enthält Beiträge zu den wichtigsten, in den Büchern V-VII behandelten Themen, auf die sich die Aufmerksamkeit der Platon-Forschung in den letzten 100 Jahren konzentrierte: praktische Philosophie, Metaphysik, Dialektik und die Frage nach dem Guten.

Francisco L. Lisi is professor of Greek Philology and director of the Instituto de Estudios Clásicos 'Lucio Anneo Séneca' (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid). He has published more than 100 contributions on ancient philosophy, especially Plato, Aristotle and the history of Platonism.
