The History of Linguistics

The history of linguistics is of increasing interest among scholars and teachers of language and linguistics worldwide, yet there is a notable lack of available teaching texts for the subject. There are only a few histories available, and all are presented in a fairly dry academic fashion, without the benefit of illustration or examples.



The book proposed here is unique in its aim to enable lecturers to teach a course on the History of Linguistics and provide them with not only the key facts, but with numerous discussion and workshop topics, suggested essay topics, and visual material such as maps, contemporary pictures, tables of important information, etc.



The book will cover the history of the subject from its foundations in Ancient Greece to its present day 20th century incarnation. The chapters will be of a common format, combining straight exposition with extracts from historical texts for examination in class, topics and issues for study and discussion, and concluding with suggestions for further reading.
