Description
David Linley has achieved international renown as a designer of furniture and accessories that reinterpret and transform traditional styles in a modern way. In his new book his unique, personal and highly successful approach is explained and expanded to encompass interior design generally and show how a wide range of traditional influences can be blended to create new, visually exciting yet harmonious interiors. The book looks at the historical context of various living spaces and traces a journey through the home. Each chapter investigates the way in which these spaces may be adapted to create a variety of visual effects suited to their environment, their owners' taste and the practicalities of modern living. The informative, thought-provoking and entertaining text reflects Linley's personal taste for the unusual as well as traditional approaches to design; the stunning illustrations reflect this appreciation of widely differing styles - including classical architecture, antique furniture, tribal and Oriental artefacts and modern design.

The first thing to say about Design and Detail in the Home is that - for most people anyway - Linley's idea of 'home' reveals his royal background. As 'a designer of bespoke furniture and accessories that reinterpret and transform traditional styles in a refreshingly modern way", his uniquely personal and highly successful approach is at the top end of the market. He is naturally most at ease and more comfortable when transforming luxurious surroundings - and this is the process lavishly illustrated in this book, in more than 200 sumptuous colour photographs. Not that there's anything wrong with that; but those who seek a practical work of DIY advice are probably looking at the wrong title. Instead Linley indulges his long-standing fascination with craftsmanship and furniture, albeit with one eye always on the English landed tradition, with occasional flashes of true inspiration. This is a volume to be admired and, now and again, gasped at.More details
