Description
In Search of Racial Justice explores Black and Minoritised Ethnic-led action on racism, examining two decades of BME struggles to bend policymaking and the wider public conversation towards the cause of racial justice. Based on in-depth interviews with policy-insiders and racial justice activists, commentators and funders, together with analysis of up to date materials from the archives of longstanding national policy-orientated racial justice organisations and official government discourse and policy on race, migration and the nation, the book shows the limits to the progress made and the relative weakness of current anti-racist modes as racism and political identities of BME populations change. Whilst campaigns such as Black Lives Matter have emerged to focus attention on racism, the case is made that the next phase of activist work must be expansive and fluid, to bring marginalised groups together across lines of 'race', class and migration and catalyse a more inclusive and inquisitive dialogue about 'race' and racism and its meaning and place in collective life. A study of current policy debates on migration and 'race' and the efforts of BME civil society organisations to emphasise racial justice, which offers future directions in BME-led racial justice organising, In Search of Racial Justice will appeal to scholars of sociology and social policy with interests in race, ethnicity, migration, multiculturalism and citizenship
