The emphasis is on the practical implementation of the schemes and wherever possible tactical advice and checklists are provided. The book covers both civil and criminal legal aid schemes and provides useful insights into other services performed by the Legal Services Commission, such as the Community Legal Service and Public defender Service. It also includes cross-references to official sources of information for other areas. Written by a leading consultant and a specialist practitioner, "Understanding Legal Aid" is a readable, easy to understand guide to doing legal aid work, applicable equally to solicitors, the not-for-profit sector and the Bar.
