The Butcher's Wife

Li Shi, a young peasant woman, is forced into an arranged marriage with a sadistic butcher. Brutalized by her husband, she is driven to madness and finally homicide. Based on a real murder in Shanghai in the 1930s, this novel won the Taiwanese Prize.
