Description
Jewish communities throughout the world differ greatly in size, the sophistication of their organizations, the freedom of their members to practice their religion and their political status. This, the fourth edition of a work originally published in 1959, attempts to provide up-to-date information on Jewish life and institutions in 98 national communities worldwide. Entries include a brief historical outline and further sections covering composition of the community, legal status, communal organizations, religious life, education, cultural activities, libraries, museums, press, welfare and historical sites. Much of the information is based on the material from the archives of the Institute of Jewish Affairs in London and on detailed information from the communities obtained through the network of contacts of the World Jewish Congress. Antony Lerman is editor of "Patterns of Prejudice", a quarterly international journal on racism and anti-semitism and editor of "IJA Research Reports", a series of research papers on comtemporary affairs affecting world Jewry.
