A Lega and English Dictionary (D.25)

Das Lega, oder Kelega, wird in der östlichen Region der Demokratischen Republik Kongo von schätzungsweise 400.000 Menschen gesprochen. Es ist eine Bantusprache (D.25 nach Guthrie) und umfasst zwei wichtige Dialektgruppen, das Isile (Lega Ntara) und das eigentliche Lega (Lega Malinga). Dieses Wörterbuch gibt eine Einführung in das Beya-Musange, eine der dialektalen Varianten des eigentlichen Lega.

Die Einführung gibt Aufschluss über die benutzte Transkription und grundlegende phonologische und morphologische Charakteristika der Sprache. Das Vokabular ist in einem Lega-Englisch und einem Englisch-Lega Vokabelteil angeordnet. Ein Index mit Proto-Bantu-Wurzeln gibt Hinweise auf Guthrie's Common Bantu (1971) und Meeussen's Bantu Lexical Reconstructions (1980).

Anhänge enthalten Verwandschaftsbezeichnungen, Pronomialparadigmen, Demonstrativa, Zahlwörter, Orts- und Personennamen sowie Übersicht über Verben der Wahrnehmung.

Lega, or Kelega, spoken in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has two dialects: Isile and Lega proper. This dictionary introduces the reader into Beya-Musange which is one of the six major sub- varieties of Lega proper.

A guide to the dictionary informs the reader about Lega transcription and alphabetization, consonant and vowel alternations, tone and vowel length and grammatical classes such as nouns, pronouns, adjectives, determiners, verbs and idiophones. The didactically structured vocabulary is presented in a Lega-English and an English-Lega dictionary. An index to Proto-Bantu roots gives cross-references to Guthrie's common Bantu (1971) and Meeussen's compilation of reconstructed forms (1980).

Appendices contain kinship terms, pronoun paradigms, demonstratives, numbers, place and people's names as well as verbs of perception.

"Botne's dictionary provides useful lexical as well as grammatical information for scholars interested in this language and region of Africa. Though its intended audience is comparative Bantuists, it can be useful to any reader with a modicum of linguistic sophistication. [...]
Since nothing can substitute for a detailed reference grammar of a language, one should not expect to find all of the mysteries of a language explained in a dictionary. Nevertheless, Botne's Lega and English dictionary is a welcome addition to the documentation of the structure of Bantu languages."
