Daphne Channing is heartsick in the wake of her father's death and haunted by his final words to her, a broken promise he'd be there when she returned. Bitter and unable to access her memories with him, she grows desperate for any shred of hope. One evening, an unexpected visitor-a large white dog-wanders out of the woods and sits down beside her. The animal, who she learns responds to the name Grief, serves as her companion as she navigates the complex stages of bereavement, opens herself up to the possibility of new love, and unearths both the brutal realities and hidden blessings buried in the rubble of her darkest day.
