The Author: Julien L. Lafontant was born in Port au Prince, Haiti. He taught for twelve years in Liberia mainly at Cuttington College and Divinity School. He received his Ph.D. from SUNY-Binghamton in 1976 and has been since then with the University of Nebraska where he is a Professor of French & Black Studies. In 1981, he received the Great Teacher Award. He has published many articles as well as a book entitled Montesquieu et le problème de l'esclavage dans l'Esprit des Lois.
